This filly had the unfortunate luck of being born on the coldest day in years in Northern Indiana in February 2007,
when temperatures were roughly negative 20 degrees (yes, you read that right!!).  Thanks to a good Samaritan who
noticed the filly lying on the ground as she drove by, this filly now has a chance at life—something that was almost
taken from her at only hours of age.  Her hind legs were frozen stiff, her mouth frozen shut, her nose was almost
frozen over and she was frozen to the ground.  This good Samaritan chose to take action, covered the filly to try and
warm her and free her from her icy prison and called one of USERL’s foster homes who immediately swung into
action.  By the afternoon, the owner had agreed to allow the foster to take both the mare and filly to her barn, where
they would at least be out of the elements.  By that evening, the owner agreed to sign the filly over to USERL so that
she could receive much needed medical attention.  She was rushed to the vet clinic, where she received IV fluids,
much needed colostrum from her dam (she had not been able to nurse before this) and she was tubed to ensure
she was getting enough to eat.

We are happy to say that despite her introduction into this world she is doing very well, and our hopes are high that
she will pull through this with flying colors! The owner has since told us that there are two other mares in the same
field who are pregnant and will be facing the same challenges, therefore, has agreed to sign over all future foals to
USERL. The mares have been moved to a suitable facility in which to give birth. They have since been examined by
our veterinarian and are due at any time.

I am very proud by the quick action taken on behalf of this little girl and the dedication shown by all involved! The filly
has been named “A Fleeting Moment,” for that is all it took for the good Samaritan to see her and decide to make a
difference in the life of this precious baby!"

Update from the foster July 2007: Her barn name is Crystal and she is 5 months old  She is doing very well and is
quite a lovely mover and she is extremely affectionate.  She loves to be handled and groomed.  Crystal has no
health issues considering the fact she was frozen to the ground when she was born also considering she was at
least a month premature.  What an absolute miracle she survived.

Her plight began in 2006 when her owner was planning to send her straight to slaughter. That is when the first of a
long line of guardian angels stepped into her life and saved her from that fate. She was placed in a very small,
private rescue, one who did not have the experience or the funds to properly rehabilitate her.
“Alli”, as we now call her, has severe CPL and all the complications that go with that. She badly needed to be
sedated, clipped, washed and medicated for her condition – that is where USERL stepped in. We offered this
rescue to donate her to us – they were planning to have her euthanized. They gladly accepted, but then the next
hurdle came – Alli was in Rhode Island and she needed to get to Indiana. USERL does not transport horses so far
– if we were to do so we would cease to function as the expense would be so great. Several people across several
states immediately began trying to raise the funds to transport her to her new life – before it was too late and her
time had once again run out. It turns out that we did not have to worry – Alli had yet another guardian angel about to
step into her life in the form of a Good Samaritan who offered not only to pay for her to be transported to her new
home, but to sponsor her throughout her rehabilitation. Alli’s angels continued to watch over her when a reputable
transporter came forward when she heard of Alli’s plight – a transporter who happened to be in the area and
happened to live in Indiana, one who offered to transport this special girl for half the normal cost for such a trip. In
short order, a coggins was pulled and a health certificate obtained, and in less that 1 week after USERL first found
out about Alli she arrived in her new home.

A Fleeting Moment
Roman
He has the blood of such greats as Bold Ruler, Sir Gallahad and Man O’ War running through him.  He won 4
races in his career and earned over $49,000.  At just 6 years of age though, he was running his biggest race yet
and he didn't even know it – the race to live.  He is the first horse rescued by USERL in Indiana. Roman Twist,
better known as Roman to those that love him, now plays in his paddock with his new equine buddies, unaware of
how close he came to being an entrée for some wealthy European.  Roman injured his right front knee while
racing, and like so many other injured Thoroughbreds, his days were now numbered.  Were it not for the
dedication and determination of new USERL volunteer Stacy Bissonnette, his story would not have such a happy
ending.  Stacy found out about Romans plight while doing her weekly walks along the shed rows on the backside
of the track, trying to help trainers and owners find second careers for their racehorses that can no longer race.
One of these trainers approached Stacy about an injured Thoroughbred, and Stacy knew that even though these
trainers and owners may love this horse, racing is a business, and a horse who cannot race can bankrupt smaller
racing barns.  Stacy immediately contacted USERL to see if we could take this horse in.  How could we turn her
down?  Stacy made all the arrangements with the owner.   We picked Roman up one Wednesday morning to bring
him to his new life.  He walked out of the barn with as much pride as any horse we have ever dealt with.  Roman is
now sound and has undergone 2 months of training.  He is a wonderful horse and will make someone a great
best friend and riding companion.

Winning Request
Retired from racing at the age of 12 - after winning close to $250,000, "Midget" as he is lovingly called is one of the
sweetest Thoroughbreds you will ever meet.  He was donated to USERL by his owners, who wanted to ensure
that he was always cared for in his retirement years.  Due to problems with the ligaments in his hind legs, Midget
is a companion only horse, but what a companion he is!!
Aramis is three months old and is quite handsome.  He was gelded on the 9th of July 2007 and has recovered
from the procedure.  He is a picture of health and loves being groomed ( if his cousin Crystal will even let him get
groomed). In this picture, Aramis is still shedding out his baby hair.

Update from the foster 2007: Marni is a very sweet horse.  She is very healthy and was a very good mother to
Crystal.  She loves attention and being groomed.  She is a submissive mare and will avoid a confrontation anyway
possible.  There appears to be no health issues and no lameness issues.  I really enjoy having her on our farm.
She is very easy to get along with.
